GOP lawmaker calls for cutting ObamaCare grants to Planned Parenthood
Republicans oppose both the health law and Planned Parenthood, which is the nation’s largest abortion provider. Planned Parenthood said the grants would not be used for abortions and would only be used to enroll people in healthcare plans.
{mosads}Still, Cassidy argued that giving the group the grant money breaks Obama’s promise not to use taxpayer money to promote abortion. In his letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Cassidy said more Americans oppose abortion than support it.
“This is a practice that is deeply offensive to many Americans’ personal and religious beliefs,” he wrote. “Their taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund a practice so many find abhorrent.
“Thus, despite President Obama’s promise during the healthcare debate, federal funds are clearly going to abortion providers through Obamacare grants,” he concluded. “I ask that you respect the will of Americans and fulfill the promise of the President by rescinding the federal funds awarded to Planned Parenthood.”
