Monday: Highway bill, veterans

The Senate will continue its work on a long-term highway bill, as Congress races toward an end-of-the-month deadline.

Senators could vote Monday on attaching the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank to the six-year highway bill, after the proposal cleared a procedural hurdle during a rare Sunday session.

{mosads}Under the rules, a vote on the Ex-Im amendment would happen at 10 p.m., if senators don’t yield back time to speed up the process.

The Senate is expected to come in at 2 p.m., and no votes are currently scheduled.

Meanwhile, House lawmakers will take up noncontroversial legislation under suspension of the rules, including legislation that would exempt veterans from the employer mandate under ObamaCare if they already have healthcare from the government.

The House originally passed the proposal, known as the Hire More Heroes Act, earlier this year. But the Senate is instead using the House-passed legislation as its vehicle for the long-term highway bill unveiled by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.)

The House will meet at noon, with votes not expected until 6:30 p.m.
