Tuesday: No Child Left Behind, visa waivers

The Senate will take a procedural vote Tuesday on an overhaul of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law.

The legislation, which overwhelmingly passed the House last week, would give more decision-making power back to state and local governments. The proposal comes eight years after the original law expired.

A cloture vote in the Senate is expected at 11:30 a.m., with 60 votes needed to move forward.

Leadership is hoping to finish their work on the legislation as early as Tuesday if they can get cooperation from lawmakers.

Meanwhile, House lawmakers will take up a handful of proposals under suspension of the rules including GOP-led legislation to tighten the Visa Waiver Program in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Votes in the House are expected between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
