Reid: I’ll bring gun legislation to floor

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Wednesday that he would bring gun legislation to the Senate floor.

“I am committed to ensuring that the Senate will consider legislation that addresses gun violence and other aspects of violence in our society early this year,” Reid said in a statement. 

{mosads}But Reid, who has opposed a ban on assault weapons in the past, offered no details on what kind of legislation he would be willing to bring to the floor. 

President Obama’s gun proposals on Wednesday including a ban on “military-style assault weapons” and a limit on ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. 

Reid over the weekend suggested the assault weapons ban, at least, stood little chance of becoming law because of opposition in the House. As a result, he suggested the Senate might not take it up.

“In the Senate, we’re going to do what we think can get through the House,” he said in a public television interview in Nevada. “And I’m not going to be going through a bunch of these gyrations just to say we’ve done something because if we’re really legislators, the purpose of it is to pass legislation.”

In his statement on Wednesday, however, Reid said “all options should be on the table moving forward” to protect people from gun violence.

“I thank the President’s task force for its thoughtful recommendations,” Reid said.
