Senate subcommittee seeks to inspire students to work for the federal government

Among the planned witnesses are a number of bureaucrats who
help run the human resources side of government operations, including Deputy
Director Office of Personnel Management Christine M. Griffin and Carolyn
Taylor, who is the chief human capital officer at the Government Accountability
Office.

{mosads}The hearing comes a little more than a month after President
Obama said he believed the economy continued to falter, in part, because there
had been layoffs of government employees.

“Our biggest problem when it comes to jobs right now is
not in the private sector—we have been creating a lot of private sector jobs,” Obama said. “The reason unemployment is still as high as it is, in part, is
because there have been huge layoffs of government workers.”

“It frustrates me sometimes when people talk about
government jobs as if somehow those are worth less than private sector jobs,”
continued Obama. “I think there is nothing more important than working on behalf
of the American people.”

The office of the committee’s chairman, Sen. Daniel Akaka
(D-Hawaii) and the office of ranking member Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) did not
offer a comment.
