Cornyn says federal relief for Texas wildfires should be offset
“The majority leader has raised the question of whether disaster relief should be paid for or whether it should be borrowed money, and I come down on the side of believing that we can’t keep borrowing money that we don’t have,” said Cornyn from the Senate floor.
Cantor last month caused an uproar by suggesting federal spending cuts should be found to offset aid for a hurricane and earthquake that recently struck the East Coast.
Cornyn said there is plenty of money currently being squandered by the federal government that ought to be corralled for disaster relief.
“The American people believe that we have plenty of money in the federal government for Congress to do its job by setting priorities and funding these priorities,” said Cornyn. “[W] e should fund it [disaster relief] instead of funding wasteful spending and duplicative programs and engaging in failed Keynesian stimulus schemes.”
