Reid: GOP’s self-destruction would be ‘good political theater’
House Republicans announced Wednesday that they would pass a resolution to fund the government through mid-December that includes language defunding ObamaCare. Democrats have said they will reject such a measure.
{mosads}If lawmakers don’t agree on a deal to fund the government by Oct. 1 — the start of the fiscal year — the government will shut down.
“I only hope that the anarchists in the House of Representatives come to their senses before it’s too late,” Reid said.
Reid also accused House Republicans of “snatching” food out of the hands of poor children by taking up a bill that slashes food assistance programs by $40 billion over 10 years.
The House bill would eliminate a waiver states can use to offer people access to the federal food stamp program for longer than three months even if they are unemployed. The Congressional Budget Office says the bill would cut 3.8 million people from SNAP in the first year alone.
“House Republicans have turned their backs on American families struggling to put food on the table,” Reid said. “It’s true their bill would save $40 billion, but how? By snatching food out of the hands of the neediest children and their families.”
The House is expected to pass both measures by the end of the week.
