Senator introduces bill to honor ‘courageous and meritorious’ conduct of war dogs
The legislation would also improve the adoption process for retired Military War Dogs (MWD) by providing them with “suitable adoption rights”; allow for the donation of doggy air miles for their domestic travel; and create a volunteer veterinary care fund “to ensure that our country’s brave MWDs are not forgotten after they retire.”
Under the plan, explained in a press release from Blumenthal’s office, brave dogs would be eligble to receive a letter of commendation from the Department of Defense.
“The legislation would empower the Department of Defense to honor courageous or meritorious dogs, or those killed in action, through appropriate recognition such as a letter of commendation,” said the release from Blumenthal’s office.
The press release explained that the military currently classifies MWDs as “equipment” despite the fact that they are living, breathing creatures.
“These courageous comrades help detect and disarm roadside bombs and IEDs — some of the deadliest threats to our troops,” Blumenthal said in a release. “They are critical partners to our combat teams. [F]or their service abroad, these dogs deserve their loyalty and dedication to be returned when they are home.”
