Reid marks anniversary of Capitol shooting

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) marked the anniversary of the 1998 Capitol shooting, which killed two Capitol Police officers.

“In this Senate chamber, as we speak, there are people here who are assigned to take care of us, the staff and all the tourists that come here,” Reid said on the Senate floor Thursday. “Their job is to do everything they can to make sure this magnificent Capitol complex is safe.

In 1998, a man who tried to enter the Capitol with a gun shot and killed Jacob Chestnut and John Gibson.

In college, Reid served as a Capitol Police officer.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also offered condolences to the families of the victims, saying, “We owe these men a debt that cannot be paid.”

At 3:40 p.m., the Senate will hold a moment in silence to remember the occasion.
