Reid sets up border bill vote

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday set up a vote for later this week on a bill providing $2.7 billion in emergency border funding.

Reid filed cloture on the motion to proceed to the border bill, which also includes $615 million in emergency funding to combat wildfires in the West and $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defense system.

{mosads}The action sets up a likely vote on Wednesday. Republicans oppose the Senate bill, so it seems unlikely it will win the 60 votes necessary to move forward.

Separate legislation is being written in the House and could be voted on by that chamber later this week.

The House bill is expected to include less than $1 billion in funds to address the wave of child immigrants crossing the border.

President Obama had requested $3.7 billion from Congress.

The Senate bill also does not include language demanded by Republicans and some centrist Democrats giving the administration more flexibility to swiftly deport children.
