Toomey calls on Senate to stop predator teachers

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) called on the Senate to pass his bill that aims to protect children from sexual predators within schools.

“As each day passes with more instances of sexual misconduct between educators and children, this delay is becoming all the more unacceptable.,” Toomey said on Monday. “It is time for the Senate to act.”

{mosads}Toomey pointed out that the House has already passed similar legislation and that the Senate should act before the new school year starts.

“Our kids will be going back to school soon,” Toomey said. “But will they be safe at school?

“Let’s pass legislation that will help keep dangerous child predators out of our schools.”

Toomey’s Protecting Students from Sexual and Violent Predators Act would require states receiving federal education funds to perform background checks on all school employees and contractors. His bill would also require that the background checks be regularly repeated.

“It is simply common sense,” Toomey said.

Some educators oppose the legislation because it violates their privacy, arguing if they have been arrested for a minor crime it could get them fired.
