Dem Sen. Brown urges FDA to better regulate Chinese-made dog food
“It just seems the FDA can be a little more aggressive with the companies that are producing this stuff,” Brown said as reported by a local Fox News affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio.
Brown was responding to reports from the Cleveland area that Chinese-made doggie treats had sickened and killed at least one local pet.
{mosads}The FDA responded with a letter to an inquiry from Brown saying they had tested several of the treats in question but had found no conclusive evidence of toxic ingredients.
“No specific products have been recalled or implicated because the laboratories running tests have not detected a contaminant that could have caused the reported illnesses,” they wrote in the letter to Brown.
But Brown said he would continue to keep an eye on the FDA’s investigation, and suggested that in the meantime pet owners should buy American-made products.
“We are closely monitoring the FDA’s ongoing investigation,” said Brown. “If evidence is found linking a contaminant to any of the products we carry, we will take appropriate action but currently all of the pet foods and treats available at Wal-Mart are in compliance with all government regulations.”
