Dem senator calls on Congress to address racial profiling

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) applauded the administration’s federal regulations on racial profiling, but said they don’t go far enough.

“It only applies to the federal agencies,” Cardin said on the Senate floor Monday. “We need to act because only we can … close all loopholes.”

{mosads}His remarks came after the Department of Justice announced it is expanding rules against racial profiling by federal law enforcement officials.

Cardin said those were positive changes but that only Congress could extend those regulation to state and local police departments, where there have been several recent instances of the police killing unarmed black men.

Cardin said the United States is “not where we need to be” on racial profiling issues. He has introduced S. 1038, the End Racial Profiling Act, which directs the DOJ to train all law enforcement to reduce racial profiling.
