Reid: Senate could be in session until Thursday

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is warning senators they could be in session until Thursday, as Democrats seek to complete their final work before adjourning for the year.

{mosads}“We’re going to have to be here until we finish our work,” Reid said on the Senate floor Monday. “Whether that’s Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday.” 

On Saturday, Reid filed cloture on 23 of President Obama’s nominees, as senators worked into the weekend to approve a $1.1 trillion government funding bill that averted a government shutdown.

Aside from the nominees, Reid has said he also wants to complete work on a package of tax breaks and potentially the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, which provides businesses a government backstop in the event of a terrorist attack.

“We have a lot of work to do. Let’s work together to get it done as quickly as possible,” Reid said. “We can complete everything we want to today.”

Reid would need the cooperation of every senator to expedite the votes. Otherwise, procedural hurdles could keep the Senate working until late in the week.
