McConnell sets up Lynch vote
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) set up a procedural vote Tuesday night on Loretta Lynch’s attorney general nomination.
The Kentucky Republican filed cloture on the nomination Tuesday night, meaning the Senate could take a procedural vote Thursday.
{mosads}The movement on the Lynch nomination comes in the wake of an agreement on a bill to curb human trafficking. McConnell had tied the two together and refused to let senators leapfrog over the anti-trafficking legislation.
McConnell told reporters he was “happy” with his strategy, which has left the attorney general nomination in limbo after it was originally expected to voted on in mid-March.
“Yeah, I’m happy with it,” he said, when asked whether he thought linking the two issues was the only way to get the trafficking bill through the Senate. “I’m happy with where we are. We needed to finish the trafficking bill, it’s an important bill.”
Lynch is expected to have a close confirmation vote, but with five Republicans publicly supporting her, she’s expected to have enough votes to squeak through the Senate.
