Senate moves up final Iran vote
The Senate will take a final vote Thursday on legislation that will allow Congress to review and vote on a nuclear deal with Iran.
Senators will take a procedural vote on the legislation on Thursday afternoon and then quickly move to a final vote on passing the bill. That’s a break from Senate rules, which requires that legislation get an extra 30 hours of debate. That would have meant that senators would have had to hold a rare Friday session or let the debate carry over into next week.
{mosads}Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, asked on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon to move the vote up, and no senator objected.
The move is a quick turn around from earlier Thursday, when questions were raised by Corker’s request to push a procedural vote originally expected at 10:30 a.m. back to 2 p.m., while he and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) were trying to reach a deal on a potential package of amendments to the legislation.
Under the Senate legislation, Congress would get 30 days to approve or disapprove of a nuclear deal with Iran negotiated by the Obama administration.
