GOP senator wants Boko Haram strategy

Sen. Susan Collins wants the Obama administration to hand over a strategy to tackle Boko Haram.

The Maine Republican is offering an amendment to an annual defense policy bill that would require Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter to give Congress a plan to address the threat posed by the terrorist group that would include a regional strategy.

{mosads}The plan would have to include how to bolster Nigeria’s government and military, provide humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the terrorist organization, and back a U.N. Security Council resolution that would establish a regional task force to combat Boko Haram.

Collins also wants Director of National Intelligence James Clapper to provide an assessment to lawmakers “regarding the willingness and capability” of the Nigerian government to implement a plan to take on the terrorist group.

The senator is hoping to get her requirement included in the National Defense Authorization Act, which is currently being considered in the Senate.

Boko Haram, responsible for killing thousands, has been under the international spotlight since it kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in April 2014, spawning the Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

Collins, and 19 other female senators, wrote to President Obama last year backing increased international sanctions against the group.
