Wednesday: Highways, No Child Left Behind

House lawmakers are expected on Wednesday to take up on a short-term bill on highway funding, pitting them against the Senate, which has worked on a longer-term bill.

The House plan, backed by Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Transportation Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), would fund highways through mid-December. But senators have been working on a six-year highway bill, though how they would pay for it is unclear.

{mosads}The House will convene at 10 a.m. for morning hour. First votes are expected between 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., with final votes between 3:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Senate is expected to take a procedural vote on its overhaul of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law.

The Senate will convene at 9:30 a.m., with a cloture vote expected around 11 a.m.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) warned on Tuesday that Democrats would block the legislation from moving forward unless they received more votes on Democratic amendments.
