Warren turned down on invite to see pope

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was turned down for a date to see the pope.

The liberal icon said on Boston’s WCVB-TV on Sunday that she attempted to give her one and only guest ticket to see Pope Francis address Congress to her granddaughter, but she couldn’t come.

{mosads}“I asked my oldest grandchild, but she can’t miss school,” Warren said.

“It’s true! It’s true!” she insisted.

“What can I say? She’s in school, God bless her.”

The pope’s high-profile visit to Capitol Hill next month has launched a frenzied bit of lobbying among lawmakers, as their friends and families jockey to get a rare ticket to sit in the chamber and hear the pontiff speak. 

Preparations for the historic address are consuming the time of organizations that oversee the Capitol’s operations.

The production is like “a State of the Union address on steroids,” organizers said this week.

In her Sunday interview, Warren said she was interested to hear Pope Francis’s remarks on climate change, immigration and other issues that are considered politically fraught.

“The environment, what we do for the poor, what our obligations are to help all of us build a future — the pope makes it clear that those are issues not just of economics but those are issues of values,” she said.
