Graham knocks Obama over closed probe of Orlando gunman
Sen. Lindsey Graham is slamming the Obama administration for ending a previous investigation into the gunman behind Sunday’s mass shooting in Orlando.
“There is no way in hell this file should have ever been closed because of political correctness,” the South Carolina Republican said Tuesday. “It should have stayed open until we were sure that he was not a threat to us. The goal is to prevent these things, not react to them.”
{mosads}Graham’s comments come after presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and a top official from the National Rifle Association (NRA) separately blamed “political correctness” for the shooting in Florida.
The former White House candidate added Tuesday he was trying to fight a war against terrorism, rather than “fighting a crime.”
“If you’re expressing sympathy to [the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria] and other radical Islamic groups, if you threaten your coworkers telling them that your family is a member of al-Qaeda. … The FBI should never close the file until they’re sure you’re not a threat in terms of attacking our homeland,” he added.
The senator’s comments come after FBI Director James Comey told reporters Monday that in mid-2014 the FBI investigated possible ties between gunman Omar Mateen and Moner Mohammad Abusalha, a suicide bomber for the Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate Nusra Front.
“We learned from the investigation that the killer knew him casually from attending the same mosque in that area of Florida. But our investigation turned up no ties of any consequence between the two of them,” he added.
Comey said that Mateen, who gunned down 49 people in a gay nightclub, was also temporarily on a federal watchlist and the source of a separate investigation that started in 2013.
