Dem says Cordray will win cloture under filibuster deal
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday morning that the two parties are close to a deal on nominations that would allow Democrats to avoid a change to Senate rules regarding the filibuster. Cordray was one of the controversial nominations to which Republicans objected, along with two nominations to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
{mosads}As of 11 a.m., no deal was announced, and it was unclear what it might mean for the two NLRB nominees.
Like Reid, Udall praised Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for helping both sides find a way forward on the yet-to-be-announced agreement. But he also praised Reid for pushing the issue.
“At this point, he realized we were getting things clogged up, there was too much obstruction, and so he needed to force the issue,” Udall said. “And I’m very proud that he has because I think it’s pushed us in the right direction. We’re going to get executive nominees in place on a timely basis, and we’re going to get rid of all the delay we’ve had.”
A vote to end debate on Cordray will start eight hours of debate on that nomination, which will lead to a final vote. After that, the Senate is expected to take up the next six nominations in a similar fashion.
