Conservative group targeting red-state Dems over Sessions
A conservative group is launching a new ad campaign touting Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) ahead of his attorney general confirmation hearings next week targeting three states where Democrats are up for reelection.
The Judicial Crisis Network is releasing an initial 30-second ad on Friday that includes comments from Alabama residents praising Sessions’s work in the Senate.
“Sen. Sessions saw that there was a real need for the families that were losing their loved ones. For him to be in charge of the highest law enforcement agency, he’s the kind of person that needs to be there,” Johnny Spann, an Alabama resident whose son was killed in combat in Afghanistan, says in the ad.
{mosads}The video is a teaser of a seven-minute video that will be posted to ConfirmSessions.com, a website that combats criticism of Sessions.
“He will abide by the Constitution, he will put public safety ahead of political agendas, and he will prosecute corrupt public officials regardless of political party,” Severino said.
Democratic Sens. Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) are each up for reelection in 2018 in states carried by President-elect Donald Trump and will be under immense pressure to support his attorney general pick.
Though Sessions has drawn skepticism from top Democrats, they’ll face an uphill battle to block his nomination.
Republicans only need 50 votes to approve him to lead Trump’s Justice Department. Republicans have coalesced around the selection, and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has also signaled that he’ll support his Senate colleague.
