Booker bears over-balcony ice bucket
New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker became the latest to get a quick, ice-cold shower on Wednesday, after taking Gov. Chris Christie up on his bipartisan challenge as part of a viral charity fundraising campaign.
In a video posted on the Democrat’s YouTube page, Booker, standing barefoot in a T-shirt and khaki shorts, tells the camera that he’s accepting Christie’s challenge because, “Far be it for me to ever let the governor one up me.”
{mosads}The lawmaker’s niece and a staffer then proceed to tip a bin full of H2O over the balcony of a house and right onto the senator.
The so-called ice bucket challenge raises money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Volunteers capture video of themselves participating in the challenge by getting an ice water-filled bucket dumped on their heads, or else they make a donation to an ALS charity, before passing the challenge onto others.
Booker was nominated for the freezing stunt by Christie earlier this week.
Several public officials have also gotten in on the shiver-inducing action. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) nominated all her colleagues in the upper chamber after participating in the ice bucket challenge on Wednesday.
President Obama was nominated for the ice bucket challenge by Ethel Kennedy, but declined to take on the soaking wet option. A White House spokesman said, “his contribution to this effort will be monetary.”
