Demi Lovato to push mental health reform

Singer Demi Lovato is teaming up with former Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) to push Congress to pass mental health legislation.

The 22-year-old “Really Don’t Care” singer, who has been open about her struggle with addiction and bipolar disorder, will join Kennedy and Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D) at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) annual convention in Washington on Thursday.

{mosads}Kennedy is a longtime mental health reform advocate. He publicly disclosed he had bipolar disorder to constituents in 2000. Deeds was stabbed by his mentally ill son, who then killed himself, in 2013.

“While there has been dialogue and some progress since the White House’s Conference on Mental Health last year, the country and those living with mental illness are still waiting on Congress to act,” NAMI Executive Director Mary Giliberti said in a statement.
