‘Interstellar’ stars twinkle at DC premiere
D.C. was buzzing Wednesday night over the midterm elections and heavy Democratic losses, but there was one place in the nation’s capital where political chatter did not invade the atmosphere: the star-studded premiere of “Interstellar.”
Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and director Christopher Nolan lit up the red carpet (which was actually black) at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum as they brought the sci-fi movie to Washington.
{mosads}Academy Award winner McConaughey had just celebrated his 45th birthday a day earlier, on Election Day. The actor said he’s used to sharing his annual festivities with Americans heading to the polls.
“It’s always right there!” exclaimed McConaughey. “There’s always some kind of election going on. Yes, absolutely — I’ve gotten used to that.”
But the entertainer, who plays a former NASA pilot in the cinematic space adventure, didn’t appear too used to publicly discussing his views. While he has a “daily check-in” on what’s going on in the world of politics, he kept mum when ITK asked his thoughts on the 2016 race, saying with a smile, “I won’t be sharing them right now.”
Hathaway didn’t play coy when asked her thoughts on the midterm elections results.
“I think a red carpet is no place for politics,” said Hathaway, who has been an outspoken supporter of President Obama.
Chastain also shied away from political talk.
“I don’t really talk about my personal views in politics because I’m not a political science major and I don’t want someone to vote based on my personal point of view,” Chastain said. “I believe that other people should talk about it more than me. But I’m definitely involved, and with my friends I talk about very openly about what I hope for in 2016.”
The 37-year-old “Zero Dark Thirty” star did offer an answer when questioned about what Washington-type she’d love to meet while in the District.
“I’ve never met the president,” Chastain said, “I thought when I made ‘The Help,’ I’m like, ‘Oh, we’ll go to the White House and I’ll meet the president!’ But I never got to go.”
“Interstellar” opens nationwide on Friday.
