Dem pokes fun at Pierce Brosnan’s dancing
Hollywood star Pierce Brosnan shouldn’t count on Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s (D-Conn.) vote if he ever gets on “Dancing with the Stars.”
DeLauro introduced Brosnan at the One Degree cancer fundraiser on Tuesday in Washington. The Connecticut lawmaker hinted that she was impressed with the actor’s singing skills but not so much with his dance moves in the 2008 musical film, “Mamma Mia!”
{mosads}DeLauro called Brosnan an “action guru,” citing his work in the “James Bond series,” where he played the British agent.
But as for his work in the musical, she joked, “Singing, maybe singing. We don’t know about that dancing though,” causing the room to erupt in laughter.
Brosnan, along with actress Marcia Cross and NBA Hall of Famer and cancer survivor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, joined with Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to launch the One Degree campaign, which is lobbying Congress to increase federal funding for cancer research by $6 billion by 2017.
DeLauro, who has been in remission from ovarian cancer for 30 years, recently co-sponsored a bill with Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.) that would increase cancer funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over the next seven years.
Four Republicans and six Democrats also attended Tuesday’s event, pledging their support to increase funding.
“We are all just one degree from cancer. Battling this disease with medical science should be a priority for every government, for every human being, and $6 billion dollars for the NIH over the next two years and a billion dollars for the NCI [National Cancer Institute] over the next two years is not a lot of money to ask for,” DeLauro said.
