FLOTUS calls for stories about vets with Kerry Washington, Sarah Jessica Parker
Michelle Obama is posing for her latest magazine spread with two TV heavyweights: “Scandal’s” Kerry Washington and “Sex and the City” alum Sarah Jessica Parker.
The trio is seen embracing on the cover of Glamour magazine’s May issue.
{mosads}In the glossy mag, the first lady and actresses talk about American military veterans. Obama says Hollywood can help tell the stories of service members in the same way it has integrated storylines on gay rights issues into plots of TV shows and movies.
“Think of shows like ‘Modern Family,’ ” Obama says, “Hollywood can play a powerful role in normalizing veterans into our lives.”
Parker stresses the role of women, saying, “The entertainment industry loves a big war movie, but women don’t feature in those stories typically; it’s men in these heroic, unthinkable missions across dangerous lands.”
“You always have that shot of the woman back home on her couch, listening to the radio or watching the news,” adds Washington.
Obama also credits her mom, Marian Robinson, with being the one person who always has her back. The first lady says the 77-year-old Robinson isn’t completely happy with calling 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. home.
“Who was there when we were traveling, so the kids would come home not to butlers and an empty house? My mom. And my mom is so not this place; she’s the opposite of the White House,” Obama says. “This is not a comfortable circumstance for her.”
“But she sacrificed her comfort in her later years, when she could be doing whatever she wanted, to be in this interesting position. She did it for me, and she did it for her grandkids.”
The Glamour issue featuring Obama goes on sale on April 14.
