FLOTUS replaces Brian Williams at DC ceremony
First lady Michelle Obama will replace disgraced news anchor Brian Williams at an awards ceremony airing Friday night.
Obama is appearing in a taped introduction at PBS’s annual Lincoln Awards in Washington. It will supplant footage of Williams that had been recorded ahead of the ceremony, organizers told the New York Daily News.
The event recognizes people who aid military veterans and their families.
Williams initially filmed his spots in January before a live audience, the Daily News added.
{mosads}Cappy McGarr, co-founder of the ceremony, said on Thursday that Williams voluntarily removed himself from the taped proceedings over concerns his suspension from NBC News earlier this year would distract viewers.
The “NBC Nightly News” broadcaster was suspended on Feb. 10 for six months without pay amid revelations he embellished stories about his military reporting overseas.
“As managing editor and anchor of ‘Nightly News,’ Brian has a responsibility to be truthful and uphold the high standards of the news division at all times,” NBC News President Deborah Turness said of his punishment at the time.
NBC News has not publicly announced what will happen to Williams once his suspension ends in August.
Anchor Lester Holt has taken over “NBC Nightly News” in his absence.
Several other celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas and Gavin DeGraw, will also appear during Friday evening’s broadcast.
