Biden to attend Women’s World Cup final

Vice President Biden is attending the FIFA Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, where the U.S. will face Japan.

Dr. Jill Biden, Biden’s wife, is leading a presidential delegation to the match in Vancouver, the White House announced on Thursday, including the Bidens, diplomatic officials and American soccer stars.

Cobi Jones, a three-time U.S. Men’s World Cup player, and Mia Hamm, a U.S. women’s national player will be part of the group cheering on their country.

{mosads}U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman also plans on attending, along with Evan Ryan, the assistant secretary of State for educational and cultural affairs.

The Americans beat Germany 2-0 in a Tuesday semifinal while Japan overcame England 2-1 Wednesday to set up the championship game.

The tournament final comes after the Justice Department launched a corruption probe into FIFA, the Federacion Internationale de Football, in late May.

The initial indictment alleged that sports marketing executives paid more than $150 million in kickbacks and bribes for media and rights to market international soccer matches since 1991.

FIFA is the global body regulating and promoting soccer worldwide.

Sepp Blatter, its current president, announced on June 2 that he would step down amid the growing corruption scandal.

“We need here a structural change of a profound nature,” he said at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.
