An Oregon bakery is facing accusations of racism for an Oreo cupcake it named “Mr. President.”
{mosads}Fat Cupcake owner Anjelica Hayes, who is black, named the cupcake “Mr. President” out of respect for President Obama, whose favorite cookie is said to be the Oreo, she told The Oregonian.
But critics say it plays on the fact that Obama’s father was black and his mother was white.
“Very troubling,” wrote one Yelp reviewer. “They were serving a cupcake called the ‘Mr. President’ that had an Oreo cookie inside. When I tried to point out the racism implied, they claimed that ‘our current president loves Oreos.’ “
Fat Cupcake has since changed the name to “The Professional” to avoid political blowback from angry customers.
Hayes says it is one of the most popular cupcakes she sells.
“I myself am black,” Hayes said.
“I just thought it was an honorary name,” she said. “I thought I’d be honored if someone named a cupcake after me.”
