‘Duck Dynasty’ star on politics: ‘I never rule anything out’
“You know, it wasn’t too long ago we were just regular people and out there working. I’m a small-business owner so a lot of those things affect me in politics,” the 41-year-old Duck Commander owner said.
Robertson and his wife, Korie, brought some Louisiana flavor to Washington on Wednesday for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s (CCAI) annual Angels in Adoption gala at the Ronald Reagan Building. The couple, parents to an adopted child, were among the honorees being recognized for their contributions to children of needy families.
{mosads}“I like staying involved in politics and trying to help shape things, especially with this, like adoption, and making some laws that can help out people,” said Robertson.
But the bearded, bandana-wearing TV regular says political office isn’t for him anytime soon, adding “At this point, right now, no — I’ve got a lot of things going on.” He then quipped, “This year, with our Christmas album coming out, we’ve got to focus on that, which is hugely important.”
He also told ITK he didn’t want to take a stab at trying to resolve the partial government shutdown, saying with a slight grin, “Shoot, I’m trying to get people to work in my duck call run, that’s hard enough.”
Yet Robertson remains optimistic.
“Washington has a way of coming through, figuring it out, and it’s not the first time this has happened,” he said. “You know, at this point in time I wish they would just, you know, sit down and try to figure this thing out.”
He added, “But I’m confident that they will. Everybody’s posturing to get their deals, but it’ll work out.”
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), chairwoman of CCIA’s advisory board, was on hand to welcome Robertson and the night’s other honoree, actress Deborra-Lee Furness, to the nation’s capital.
The Louisiana Democrat posed alongside Furness and her husband, “X-Men” star Hugh Jackman, on the red carpet. Landrieu admits that she got just a bit starstruck when she met the A-list couple: “Both of them are just the loveliest, most down-to-Earth people I ever met. So yeah, you know, you catch your breath when you first see them, but in five minutes it just all melts away.”
Rather than Wolverine himself, Rep. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.) was going gaga over getting a chance to mix and mingle with the “Duck Dynasty” pair, saying she’s a “passionate” fan of the show.
“We own every DVD, every piece of merchandise … We just really admire this family, not only for their faith, but their willingness to have fun together and to open up their home to so many people,” Noem said.
