Obamas buy their DC rental home

Former President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have officially purchased the home they have been renting since January in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Kalorama.

The ex-first family purchased the eight-bedroom, nine-and-a-half-bathroom home for $8.1 million, according to property records obtained by The Washington Post and published Wednesday.

“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property,” Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis said in a statement.

The former first couple had planned on staying in Washington while their younger daughter, Sasha, finishes high school.

The District’s tony Kalorama neighborhood is also home to White House advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, as well as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Amazon founder and Post owner Jeff Bezos.
