NEA: No funds going to ‘Julius Caesar’ featuring Trump-like title character

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) on Monday said none of its funds are going toward the New York Shakespeare in the Park’s “Julius Caesar” production that features the titular character as a President Trump-like figure.

“No taxpayer dollars support Shakespeare in the Park’s production of Julius Caesar,” a pop-up on the NEA’s website reads.

The agency in a statement said that, while it has previously provided grants to the New York Shakespeare festival, no funds this year went to the “Julius Caesar” production. 

Some of Trump’s supporters have objected to the show, claiming it celebrates a fictionalized assassination of the president.

{mosads}“The National Endowment for the Arts makes grants to nonprofit organizations for specific projects. In the past, the New York Shakespeare festival has received project-based NEA grants to support performances of Shakespeare in the Park by the Public Theater,” the statement said.

“However, no NEA funds have been awarded to support this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar and there are no NEA fund supporting the New York State Council on the Arts’ grant to Public Theater or its performances.”

The NEA is one of 66 programs that would be eliminated under Trump’s budget.

Delta Air Lines on Sunday revoked its sponsorship of New York’s The Public Theater after reports that the production depicted Caesar, who is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate at the top of Act III, as a figure meant to resemble Trump.

In a tweet Monday, Donald Trump Jr. asked “how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers.”
