Seth Meyers: Trump harsher on NFL protests than white supremacists
Late-night TV host Seth Meyers on Monday called President Trump’s attacks on protesting NFL players “unhinged,” questioning why he is harsher on them than white supremacists.
The “Late Night” host quoted a tweet from NFL player LeSean McCoy, who called Trump “an asshole.”
Trump on Friday called for NFL teams to fire players who kneeled during the national anthem, and continued his attacks over the weekend as athletes and teams fired back.
{mosads}NBA star LeBron James called Trump “a bum” and said that visiting the White House was an honor before Trump took office.
“Is there anything better than calling Donald Trump a bum?” Meyers said.
Meyers highlighted the contrast between how Trump is responding to protesting NFL players and how he dealt with white supremacists marching in Charlottesville, Va., in August, which ended in violent clashes that left one counter-protester dead.
“When black athletes peacefully protest racism and police brutality, Trump has no trouble summoning his outrage,” Meyers said. “But when white supremacists march with Nazi flags and Confederate flags … he defends them.”
Meyers also singled out several NFL team owners who donated to Trump’s campaign, then joined in protest with their players over the weekend.
