Colbert slams cabinet secretary ‘suicide pact’

Stephen Colbert opened his Thursday night show saying he is “concerned” about Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The “Late Show” host took on the NBC report that Tillerson wanted to resign from his post and called President Trump a “moron,” saying its an indication that the secretary is on his way out.

“That is, generally speaking, something you say right before you quit,” Colbert said.

Colbert poked fun at Tillerson’s press conference, where he denied that he considered leaving the White House, but declined to comment on the “moron” allegations.

“He vehemently would rather not answer that question,” Colbert said.

{mosads}The comedian also took jabs at the reported “suicide pact” that Tillerson has with Defense Secretary James Mattis and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, with each party vowing to leave if one of them is ousted.

“That’s when you know things are going great at a workplace, when people start forming suicide pacts,” Colbert said sarcastically. “They’ve also agreed that if none of them are with someone by the time they’re 70 they’ll marry each other.”

Colbert’s comments follow reports that Trump’s and Tillerson’s relationship has been tense for months, with the two disagreeing on major policy issues as well as small annoyances, such as the secretary’s habit of not returning Trump’s phone calls.
