Colbert mocks O’Reilly: A $32 million settlement is exactly what innocent people do
Stephen Colbert tore into Bill O’Reilly over the revelations that Fox News renewed the former host’s contract a month after he paid a record-high $32 million to settle a sexual harassment complaint.
O’Reilly left Fox News earlier this year after a report revealed that he had paid $13 million to five women to settle accusations. It came to light this week that O’Reilly settled with another woman for $32 million, just one month before his contract was extended.
Colbert mocked O’Reilly during his Monday night show, saying a $32 million settlement is “exactly the sort of thing you do when you’re innocent.”
{mosads}“Like in the game Clue, where the game ends when you pay off the other players $32 million so they’ll never open the envelope,” Colbert said.
“The Late Show” host also slammed Fox News for renewing O’Reilly’s contract for $100 million over four years, even when they knew about the payouts.
“Maybe they were just trying to protect their female employees,” Colbert said. “If Bill’s on camera, that’s one hour a day they knew he’s not groping somebody.”
O’Reilly has repeatedly denied the allegations of sexual harassment, telling The New York Times on Monday that he’s gone through a “horrible” experience.
