First Wawa opens in DC

Wawa, the convenience store chain beloved by Pennsylvanians, opened its first store in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

At least one lawmaker and a commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) were spotted visiting the store, which opened on 19th Street near DuPont Circle.

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D), who represents Pennsylvania’s 13th Congressional District, which includes part of Philadelphia, tweeted a photo of himself at the store’s opening.

Boyle in June took sides in the Wawa versus Sheetz war, declaring Wawa to be his preference over the other Pennsylvania chain.

“Big day here in DC!” FERC commissioner Robert Powelson wrote on Twitter, including a photo of himself with the Wawa Goose mascot.

Powelson said Wawa is “the gold standard” of convenience stores and congratulated the company on its first store in the District.

The store is the first of several the company plans to open in the D.C. area and includes its first outdoor cafe. A second Wawa is scheduled to be opened in Georgetown by the end of 2018.
