Artists to wear white roses at Grammys to protest sexual misconduct

Artists at Sunday’s Grammy Awards are expected to wear white roses in support of the ongoing initiatives to fight systemic sexual harassment, according to multiple reports.

The New York Times reported Thursday that little was initially planned for the awards show in response to the “Me Too” and “Time’s Up” movements. However, an email campaign started this week urging attendees to wear a white rose as a show of solidarity.

Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Camila Cabello and Cyndi Lauper are among the artists who have committed to wearing a white rose, the Times reported.

Kesha is also expected to give a performance of her song “Praying” as a nod toward preventing sexual misconduct in the industry. The artist in 2014 famously accused her producer, Dr. Luke, of sexual abuse. 

The entertainment community was rocked last year by allegations of sexual misconduct against numerous high-profile men, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, Louis C.K. and others. 

The music industry had fewer figures directly accused, though multiple women have alleged producer Russell Simmons raped them. 

In response, several female celebrities launched the “Time’s Up” initiative, which established a legal defense fund for women in less privileged fields who have been sexually harassed.

Nearly every attendee of the Golden Globes earlier this month wore black in a show of solidarity against the culture of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry.
