‘Rex Tillerson’ explains firing on SNL

“Saturday Night Live” riffed on the circumstances surrounding Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s ouster, portraying the outgoing top diplomat as dumbfounded by his firing. 

“It just wasn’t a good fit. But these things happen,” SNL’s Tillerson, portrayed by John Goodman, said, clutching a glass of water. 

“Are you OK?” Anderson Cooper, played by Alex Moffat, asked. 

“I’m fine, I just — ” Goodman said, taking a drink of water. 

“It’s just crazy how one day you’re the CEO of Exxon, a $50 billion company, and the next day you get fired by a man who used to sell steaks in the mail,” he said, crushing the glass in frustration.

{mosads}President Trump fired Tillerson last week in a move that caught Washington by surprise. He told reporters that he made the decision “by myself,” signaling he did not speak with Tillerson before firing him.

The two clashed often during Tillerson’s tenure.

In a press conference hours after he was fired, Tillerson did not thank Trump or mention him by name.

Tillerson said his term as the nation’s top diplomat will end at midnight on March 31. Until then, Tillerson is delegating his responsibilities to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.

Trump has nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace Tillerson.
