Colbert: Melania Trump’s jacket was ‘one message she did not steal from Michelle Obama’

Comedian Stephen Colbert on Thursday night joked that first lady Melania Trump’s controversial jacket included the “one message” she didn’t take from former first lady Michelle Obama.

“She’s forgotten the most important fashion advice: Before you leave the house, look in the mirror, and take off that jacket,” Colbert riffed on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“And I’m going to guess this is one message she did not steal from Michelle Obama,” he added.

Colbert was likely referencing the controversy Melania Trump faced during President Trump’s campaign, when she gave a speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) that appeared to copy a paragraph from a speech once given by Obama.

{mosads}The first lady on Thursday visited migrant children in Texas amid the backlash against the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which led to the separation of children from their families at the border.

During the trip, she stopped at a facility holding several of the children who were recently removed from their families. But when she boarded the aircraft for Texas, she sported a green military jacket that read “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” on the back, prompting fierce criticism, particularly on social media.

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for the first lady, insisted on Twitter that #ItsJustaJacket and said in a statement that “there was no hidden message” behind the wardrobe choice.

But President Trump wrote on Twitter that the message was intended for the “fake news media.”

“’I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media,” the president wrote. “Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”

The president on Wednesday signed an executive order that allows migrant families to remain together.

The Trump administration in April announced the “zero tolerance” immigration policy, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions instructed the Justice Department to prioritize the criminal prosecution of individuals who attempt to unlawfully cross the southern border. That policy lead to the separation of children from their families when the adults faced prosecution.
