RuPaul defends drag queen story hours at Emmys: ‘Knowledge is power’
RuPaul Charles is giving an impassioned defense of drag queen story hours, saying during his Emmy Award acceptance speech that critics are attempting to “restrict your access to power.”
“Listen, if a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her,” the star of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” said Monday as he took to the stage in Los Angeles to accept his record eight consecutive win in the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program category.
“Knowledge is power,” the 63-year-old performer said to applause at the 75th annual awards show, “and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you.”
“So listen to a drag queen!” Charles said.
The comments from the TV star come amid a flurry of anti-drag show bills being introduced around the country in recent years. Last year, a Texas law prohibiting certain “sexually oriented” performances from taking place on public property or where they may be viewed by minors was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge.
At least six states have enacted laws restricting “adult” or drag performances.
