Iowa Republican chokes up while reading resolution honoring Caitlin Clark

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) choked up Tuesday when reading a resolution honoring University of Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark.

“Today, I was proud to introduce a resolution and give remarks on the House floor about basketball phenom Caitlin Clark! Congratulations, Caitlin, for becoming the NCAA Division I basketball leading scorer,” a post by Miller-Meeks on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter reads. “Go Hawks!”

The post also includes a video of Miller-Meeks reading the resolution, which honors Clark for her recent achievement of becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball. While reading the resolution, Miller-Meeks is seen choking up as she talks about the impact Clark has had on women’s sports.

“Whereas the Hawkeyes have sold out games at home at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and on the road at arenas across the United States,” Miller-Meeks reads. “Whereas, every sold out game… is full of young girls, watching Clark and the Hawkeyes demonstrate the excitement, competition and fun that is possible because of women’s sports.”

Last Thursday, Clark announced she would enter the WNBA draft, forgoing another year of NCAA eligibility.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), also celebrated Clark’s achievement Sunday in a post on X.

“Caitlin Clark cements herself as the gr8est college bball player EVER as she breaks the all time scoring record The pride of Iowa & leader of a gr8 Hawkeye wbb TEAM,” he said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
