Hollywood stars celebrate Trump guilty verdict: ‘Tears of joy’
Celebrities — including some of Donald Trump’s fiercest critics in Hollywood — are celebrating a New York jury convicting the former president of all 34 counts in his hush money criminal case.
“We are all cheering for justice and that no one is above the law!” John Leguizamo, who’s voiced support for President Biden, wrote on social media Thursday, shortly after the guilty verdict was announced.
“Trump can’t legally vote for himself now!” Leguizamo wrote in another post on social platform X. “I love karma! It’s a good day for America!”
Trump became the first former president to be convicted of a felony after jurors found him guilty of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment his then-fixer, Michael Cohen, made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Prosecutors had argued that the move was to keep secret Trump’s alleged affair with Daniels until after votes were cast.
Trump has denied the affair and had pleaded not guilty.
“Tears of joy,” Kathy Griffin said on X. The comedian faced a federal investigation after posting a controversial photo with the fake severed head of Trump in 2018.
Barbra Streisand, a longtime Democratic donor, reacted to the conviction with an appeal to voters: “Convicted felon Donald Trump is blaming the judge, the jury and New York for being found guilty on 34 counts. He will never accept accountability for his crimes. Americans must not allow this felon anywhere near the White House again.”
“Say Anything” star John Cusack wrote of Trump, “The dumb treacherous criminal is now a convicted felon – 34 times over.”
“Star Trek” actor George Takei, also a frequent critic of Trump, mocked the ex-commander in chief, writing, “We should start referring to him as 34 instead of 45.”
