Jane Fonda leads DC climate protest for 9th straight Friday

Actress Jane Fonda led a climate demonstration in Washington for a ninth consecutive Friday, this time to highlight the financial institutions that activists say are financing immigrant detention centers and fueling the climate crisis.

The Academy Award winner was joined by fellow actresses Taylor Schilling of the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” Kyra Sedgwick of TNT’s “The Closer” and Maura Tierney of “NewsRadio” and “ER.”

“Today, we’re going to focus on one of the most immediate and horrible results of the climate crisis — climate refugees,” Fonda said. “This is also a human rights issue.”

Sedgwick said that her “obsession” with the climate the crisis started after the birth of her first child. On Friday, she leveled her criticisms at the Trump administration.

“While I often despair deeply about our current administration’s rollbacks, inaction and insanity of denying the science of climate change, I am deeply encouraged by the conversation,” she said.

Following the rally, demonstrators marched to buildings housing financial institutions like BlackRock and Wells Fargo.

Members of Shut Down DC — a coalition of climate change activists — sat with their hands taped together and blocked the front entrance of a Wells Fargo location, in protest of the bank’s “continued investment in fossil fuels, inhumane detention camps & gun manufacturers,” the group wrote on Twitter.

BlackRock and Wells Fargo did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 

D.C. police said no arrests were made during Friday’s demonstrations.
