Country music singer Joe Diffie died Sunday due to complications related to COVID-19, his publicist confirmed to Rolling Stone. He was 61.
Diffie, born and raised in Oklahoma, had five No. 1 singles in the early ’90s, including his debut release, “Home.”
Diffie won the Grammy Award for best country collaboration with vocals for the recording “Same Old Train” in 1998.
Diffie released a statement Friday announcing he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
“I am under the care of medical professionals and currently receiving treatment,” Diffie said at the time. “My family and I are asking for privacy at this time. We want to remind the public and all my fans to be vigilant, cautious and careful during this pandemic.”
The virus has rapidly spread across the U.S., with more than 137,000 confirmed cases and 2,414 deaths in the country, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
