Group to hand out free marijuana at inauguration

A pro-marijuana group plans to protest President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration by passing out free joints to attendees.

The D.C. Cannabis Coalition told WUSA News it will be marching from Dupont Circle to the National Mall, where Trump will be sworn-in, on the morning of Inauguration Day as part of its push to legalize marijuana.

“The main message is it’s time to legalize cannabis at the federal level,” said Adam Eidinger, the founder of the coalition. Eidinger helped pass a ballot initiative in Washington, D.C., making it legal to possess two ounces or fewer of marijuana, as well as growing it and giving it away.

“We don’t want any money exchanged, whatsoever. This is really a gift for people who come to Washington, D.C.,” he said.

{mosads}The plan, according to the coalition, is to give out 4,200 “gifts” and light them up 4 minutes and 20 seconds into Trump’s inauguration speech, a play on 420, which is code for pot in pop culture.

While it is legal in D.C. to distribute pot, smoking at the inauguration would be illegal.

Recreational marijuana is legal in seven states and D.C., and 26 other states have legalized weed to some extent, mostly for medical use.
