Trump: Oscars’ focus ‘on politics’ led to best picture mix-up
President Trump is calling Sunday’s Oscar ceremony “sad,” saying the awards show was “focused so hard on politics” it led to the epic mix-up over the best picture winner.
“I think they were focused so hard on politics that they didn’t get the act together at the end,” Trump said Monday in an interview with Breitbart News.
“It was a little sad. It took away from the glamour of the Oscars,” Trump said of the 89th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
In a midnight stunner, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway (thanks to the wrong category’s envelope being handed to them) mistakenly presented the best picture trophy to “La La Land” instead of actual winner “Moonlight.”

While multiple stars took to the stage to denounce Trump’s policies, none of them mentioned the commander in chief by name. First-time host Jimmy Kimmel hurled a few jabs Trump’s way in his opening monologue, telling the crowd: “Some of you will get to come up on this stage tonight and give a speech that the president of the United States will tweet about in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movement tomorrow.”
“I’ve been to the Oscars,” Trump said the next day. “There was something very special missing, and then to end that way was sad.”
Neilsen ratings released Monday show that the ceremony was the least-watched Academy Awards in nearly a decade, bringing in 32.9 million viewers.
