Larry King, Jim Carrey among few Kathy Griffin defenders
A small number of celebs — including Jim Carrey and Larry King — are speaking out in support of Kathy Griffin’s controversial “beheading” photo of President Trump.
“I think it’s the job of the comedian to cross the line at all times,” Carrey told “Entertainment Tonight” in a Wednesday interview.
“That line is not real and if you step out into that spotlight and you’re doing the crazy things that [Trump’s] doing, you know we’re the last line of defense,” the “Ace Ventura” star added. “The comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing.”

Griffin was on the receiving end of widespread condemnation on Tuesday after releasing a fake blood-filled snapshot from photographer Tyler Shields of her holding a prop made to look like Trump’s decapitated head. Everyone from former first daughter Chelsea Clinton to former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney slammed the move. Griffin apologized hours later, saying she “went too far.”
CNN cancelled Griffin’s annual role co-hosting its New Year’s Eve special in the wake of the photo controversy.
King, who ruled CNN’s airwaves for more than two decades as host of “Larry King Live,” said while the photograph was “in terrible taste,” he felt sympathy towards the former “My Life on the D-List” star.
“She’s my friend. She made a mistake. She apologized. Let it go,” King told TMZ.
“I wouldn’t have fired her. [CNN founder] Ted Turner wouldn’t have fired her. They’re jumping all over her now … I would’ve kept her.”
“Kathy is that kind of comic,” King said Thursday. “They go over the edge a lot.”
Trump had responded to the gory image, calling it “sick,” while his wife, Melania Trump, dubbed it “disgusting” and questioned Griffin’s “mental health.”
But Mike Lawrence, an Emmy-nominated comedian, criticized her for apologizing for the stunt. “You know what you did and you should own it,” the comic wrote on Facebook.
“You wanted a reaction and you got it. So live in it. Don’t apologize. This is you now.”
