Tyler Perry on Trump: I wish there wasn’t ‘so much division coming out of the White House’
Tyler Perry says he’s “not disappointed” with the job President Trump is doing because the commander in chief has “shown us to be who he is all through the campaign.”
At the Washington premiere of his new film, “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” on Thursday, Perry told ITK that one of the most frightening things in the country is divisiveness.
“I think the scariest thing that’s going on in this country — not only in Washington, but in this country — is this divide,” the actor and award-winning filmmaker said. “I feel this divide, this divisiveness that’s going straight down in the heart of America. It’s really bad. It’s really tearing us all apart. I was hoping, and I’m still hopeful, that this administration or the next administration to come in will start to bind us together rather than divide us apart.”
When asked to rate Trump’s job performance, Perry paused before saying that he wasn’t let down.
“You know, I’m not disappointed, and I’ll tell you why. Because he has shown us to be who he is all through the campaign. What I was hopeful was that when he got into office some of the rhetoric would calm down, some of the tweeting would calm down, some of the divisiveness would calm down. But it hasn’t,” Perry said.{mosads}
“So for me, it is clearly about at this point just use what I can to make people laugh and encourage them to be light in moments like this. I wish [Trump] well, because he is the president of the United States and I stand by and all due respect for the office, but I just wish there wasn’t so much division coming out of the White House.”
Ahead of the 2016 presidential election, Perry said he supported Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but wished Trump well after he won in November.
Ahead of Trump’s inauguration earlier this year, Perry told TMZ that he “hopes for” Trump every day that he does a good job as president.
“Tyler Perry’s Boo 2!” hits theaters on Oct. 20.
