Michael Jordan donating $2M to help Hurricane Florence victims

Michael Jordan announced Tuesday that he will donate $2 million to help those affected by Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas.

The NBA legend, who played high school basketball in Wilmington, N.C., is donating $1 million each to the American Red Cross and the Foundation For The Carolinas’ Hurricane Florence Response Fund, according to a statement by the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan is the NBA team’s chairman.

{mosads}“It’s truly devastating for me to see the damage that Hurricane Florence is doing to my beloved home state of North Carolina and to the surrounding areas,” Jordan said in a statement earlier this week. “The recovery effort will be massive, and it will take a long time to repair the damage and for families to get back on their feet.”

Business and basketball staff from the Hornets are also partnering with the Food Lion grocery chain to pack meals for residents of affected cities in the Carolinas.

The Charlotte Hornets Foundation, the team’s philanthropic organization, will be making an additional donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

The Hornets have also teamed up with the NBA’s merchandising partner to create “Carolina Strong” t-shirts, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Foundation For The Carolinas’ Hurricane Florence Response Fund.

The team announced its intention to raise money for Florence victims earlier this week, and has also set up a website through NBA Cares to raise money from fans.
